"Complex"
Miles Francis’ single, “Complex”, shows signs of an interesting dark pop career. He does a great job layering loads of vocals together, to create a sound similar to Dirty Projectors’ David Longstreth. The harmonies are solid and the deep pitch shift on his vocals is a nice addition. “Complex” has a great build into a heavy eerie bass line, something you could hear in an alt-J mix. This song could have taken a much darker path, but Miles moves this track into the pop lane, using strong, catchy melodies in the chorus.
This song doesn’t impress lyrically. It’s pretty simple when broken down. Where “Complex" misses the mark in songwriting, it exceeds in melody. Miles’ strong points are in his production and vocals. There’s a powerful shift into the chorus. “Have you found my complex, buried underneath the brush”, flows so smoothly that it’s surprisingly great. He’s already worked with Mark Ronson, The Roots, and Sharon Jones. It seems like Miles has picked up on some of their musical talents. It’ll be exciting to see where his career takes him after this debut.
Miles Francis's debut EP ’Swimmers’ is out on February 2nd.
